Sam and Nicola Burton began Wrestow Stud in 2006 after importing from Holland their first KWPN graded mares to their 1,300 acre Hall Farm at Wormleighton in Warwickshire. Nicola gained her wealth of experience with horses as a member of the Hutsby family well known in Warwickshire for many generations of breeding, training and riding their own point to pointers and hunter chasers. Her husband Sam runs the family farm that has been in the Burton family since 1970. Sam always had a big interest in the farm’s ‘Wrestow‘ herd of 140 pedigree dairy cows. However as farming has undergone many changes, milk production at Hall Farm became an unviable option for the future and the herd was dispersed in 2007. Sam and Nicola thought it would be great to retain the Wrestow herd prefix with a new breeding venture and hence their sports horse venture became known as Wrestow Stud.
The current mix of 40 mares and youngsters share the farm with 900 breeding ewes 70 over wintered cattle and 1000 acres of arable crops. This stud is exceptionally well resourced with an expanse of improved pasture, excellent quality winter forage, modern type buildings and facilities and a broad mix of all the right skills.
Prior to 2006 Nicola successfully bred and reared foals from her retired hunter mare Doris. One day a local contact suggested that if interested in sports horse breeding you should take a look at how things were done in Holland and Germany. Consequently a trip to Holland provided a whole new insight into why so many of the best performing horses in the UK and throughout the world were from there. On breeders farms, the systems of keeping and rearing horses were much less work per horse than you would generally find in the UK, and their selection criteria for breeding hugely more rigorous, using only graded mares from a stud book with a wealth of information on a horses’ maternal line for many generations. To a cow breeder a good maternal line was of much more importance than the immediate sire of your animal. In Holland following a grueling selection process only approved sires are accepted into the stud book for breeding so generally every mare was by a good sire. This is the basis for Wrestow stud, the best foundation mare lines we could source from the worlds most successful and reliable studbook combined with only approved sires of an international standing.
